In the early days in Needham, Massachusetts settlers primarily relied on agriculture to make their living. During the 18th Century saw and grist mist were opened along the Charles River. During the 19th century land speculation and the extension of the rail promoted settlement in the town and the growth of industrial employment and production continued to grow. During this time knitters migrated to the area from the English Midlands to reestablish their businesses because of economic changes in their own country. The William Carter Company is the most famous of these companies. Although the William Carter Company still produces fine knitwear, they are no longer in Needham.

Although housing development, land speculation, and knitting was still the primary way of life, in 1931 the Route 128 was built, and this opened the town up to development in the post World War II electronic industrial boom. In 1950 one of the nation's first industrial park was built in Needham. Today Needham is primarily a suburban community that has easy access to Boston. It has a strong sense of community and excellent school system that keeps the town strong and growing. This year Needham is approaching its 300th anniversary.
